Sri Lanka and England face the prospect of another wash-out in Dambulla on Saturday with the weekend forecast for more rain in the Sri Lankan hill town. Wet conditions cut off the series opener after 15 overs, and matters do not look like improving during the second ODI even with a reserve day in hand, because both Saturday and Sunday are forecast to be very wet.
For Sri Lanka, who in the words of Dinesh Chandimal are at a stage similar to where England were after a poor 2015 World Cup campaign, these matches are critical to forming their squad for next summer’s showpiece event.
England have risen to No 1 in the ODI rankings under Eoin Morgan’s captaincy after being eliminated in the group stages of the 2015 World Cup but now find themselves being spoken of as favourites to lift the trophy at home in 2019.
Morgan was left frustrated after the opening match was washed out, and looks in line for more such sentiment.
