England Women skipper Charlotte Edwards stole the show and led her team to post 153 for 7 in their first match of T20 Women’s World Cup 2016 against Bangladesh Women at Bengaluru on Thursday. She went past India skipper Mithali Raj highest score of 42. Her fifty came off from 46 deliveries including seven boundaries and a strike rate of 136. Though they are the former champions of T20 World Cup, they faced tough competition from Bangladesh from time-to-time. Charlotte and Tammy Beaumont started the innings for England posing 31-runs for 1st wicket stand but Tammy could not withstand longer and Bangladesh got their first breakthrough given by Jahanara Alam. England’s yet another key player Sarah Taylor struggled to put the required runs on board and was out too quick going for 9, this time Bangladesh got a biggie on their hand with help of Fahima Khatun. This followed by second consecutive wicket of Heather Knight which just came in too soon pulling down the expected score to 150 which was soaring to 170-180. Natalie Sciver and Charlotte took the game ahead putting up a commendable 44-runs 4th wicket stand leading England to 100-plus runs, keeping the hopes alive for England to go atleast past 150. England are placed in Group B alongside India, West Indies, Pakistan and their current opponents Bangladesh, Although English Women are favourites for the day-night clash, they would not want to take the Bangladesh team lightly. This is the fifth ICC Women’s World T20 and it is the first time that it is being held in India. Australia have won the last three tournaments. England won the inaugural season of the World T20 played in front of their own crowd in 2009. England have appeared in all the four tournaments and have also been runner-up twice in the last two tournaments.
