Former India Team Director Ravi Shastri could continue in the role after players came out in support of him. According to sources, senior Indian cricketers were all praise for Shastri, and indicated that they wanted him to return in his role as Team Director. It is understood that there will be no head coach if Shastri continues as the Team Director. Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Murali Vijay spoke up in favour of Shastri. A source in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said that a number of senior players were “all praise for the work done by Shastri.” READ: Former Team India Director Ravi Shastri discusses his life and cricket
According to Indian Express, a source in the BCCI said, “We consulted the players recently on who they want to be the head of the team and many senior players were all praise for the work done by Shastri, and have said that they would be really happy if he continues in his role. A decision would be made soon. There won’t be a Team Director and a full-time coach. It will be only one post, and even Ravi’s contract can come up for renewal.” READ: Ravi Shastri’s contract with BCCI ends; to be renewed if Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Sourav Ganguly approve
India’s Test captain Kohli said, “As far as captaincy is concerned, he would like to let people learn themselves. But if need be, he will come and tell you. So when he sees something that a batsman is being bogged down in a particular area, he will tell you a solution about what can be done.” READ: India’s next coach: Should it be an Indian or foreigner?
India’s premier spinner Ashwin said, “I am someone who likes talking cricket and discussing cricket. Especially with him [Shastri] around, he is someone who enjoys the same pattern. When we talk and discuss a lot, new opportunities open up to try a few things. The improvement has already started.”
Test opener Vijay said, “Ravi bhai has his own style of putting it across. (He lifts the mood) 100 percent. Just the energy you get onto the table. At the right time, I think, he has come.”
