Opener Shikhar Dhawan could miss India‘s next two games of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 against New Zealand and Pakistan, on June 13 and 16, respectively after he sustained a possible fracture on his thumb during India’s previous match against Australia on Saturday.

CricketCountry has learned that Dhawan has gone to Leeds for further assessment on extend of the injury and while there is still speculations on for how long Dhawan will be sidelined, it is confirmed that the 33-year-old will miss India’s next two games.

With Dhawan’s unavailability, India may be forced to change their successful opening combination. KL Rahul, India’s back-up opener up till the World Cup could be bumped up the order making way for either Vijay Shankar or Dinesh Karthik to fill in the No.4 slot.

Dhawan, hero of India’s win over Australia at Kennington Oval, played through pain after being hit on the thumb by a rising delivery from pacer Pat Cummins.

He looked in considerable pain but carried on to score 117 off 109 balls. However, Dhawan didn’t take the field due to the injury and Ravindra Jadeja fielded in his place for the entire 50 overs.

After the match at Kennington Oval, Virat Kohli was asked for an update on Dhawan. He replied by saying that he had not heard from the team management but that Farhart was working with Dhawan, and that an update would be provided in a couple days. Dhawan underwent precautionary tests on Tuesday, and official word from the Indian team is expected today.

The left thumb has been a long-standing issue for Dhawan, who first picked up the injury in 2016 when he was hit by a bouncer on the same spot by New Zealand pacer Trent Boult.

India next play New Zealand at Old Trafford on Thursday. And if India make to the semi-finals, that will be on July 9, nearly one month away.
