Dinesh Karthik and Kevin Pietersen were on song as they guided Delhi Daredevils (DD) to a competitive total of 164 for seven against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2014. The duo were involved in a 71-run stand for the second wicket at almost nine runs an over. After Pietersen was dismissed for 49, Karthik struck a 56-run partnership with JP Duminy for the third wicket. But Delhi faced a later innings collapse as they lost five wickets for only 24 runs. Sandeep Sharma and Beuran Hendricks were the pick of the bowlers for Punjab as both took three wickets each.

Punjab captain George Bailey won the toss and elected to field. This is Match 45 of IPL 2014. Delhi made a raft of changes as Wayne Parnell, Mohammed Shami, Jaydev Unadkat and Murali Vijay came into the side. Punjab brought in Beuran Hendricks for Mitchell Johnson. Delhi are out of the race for making it into the IPL 7 play-offs. Punjab entered the match needing one win to confirm their progress.

Murali Vijay and Pietersen opened the batting for Delhi. Sandeep began proceedings for Punjab. Vijay hit the first boundary in the innings with a cover drive for four.  Beuran Hendricks shared the new ball with Sandeep. Pietersen pulled a back of a length delivery towards wide long-on for a four.

Sandeep then bowled one slightly short and Vijay tried to loft it on the leg side. He top-edged it behind short fine-leg, but Hendricks ran backwards and took a good catch. Vijay was out for five runs. Pietersen then cut a length delivery through cover-point for a four.

Hendricks then continued as he bowled the fourth over. He bowled a wide delivery and Pietersen cut the ball in-between cover and point for a four. Hendricks bowled another wide delivery and Pietersen cut hard and edged the ball past short third-man for another four. Hendricks then bowled a bouncer and Pietersen hooked the ball for a six over fine-leg.

Karthik decided to get some boundaries of his own. He bent down and slog-swept a length delivery from Sandeep for a six towards deep backward square-leg. Left-arm spinner Akshar Patel was then brought into the attack in the sixth over. Karthik cut a short delivery in front of point for a four.

Bailey then threw the ball to Rishi Dhawan ahead of the seventh over. The first four deliveries only yielded three runs. The next two deliveries were struck for fours by Pietersen. The first was through backward-point and the second was through cover. Through those fours, the 50 of the partnership came up for Pietersen and Karthik.

Dhawan bowled a short and wide delivery and Karthik cut the ball behind point for a four. Virender Sehwag showed off his athletic abilities by stopping a ball at short third-man diving to his left.

As Pietersen was nearing a well-deserved half-century, Akshar Patel struck. He pitched one on middle-stump line and turned it away from Pietersen. The ball evaded Pietersen’s bat and knocked the stumps. Pietersen had depart for 49 off 32 deliveries with six fours and one six. Karthik, tough, kept up the scoring with a slog-sweep off Shivam Sharma for a four behind square on the leg side.

Dhawan was brought back into the attack in the 13th over. Karthik slammed a wide delivery through point for another four. The 15th over bowled by Dhawan proved to be very expensive. Karthik hit one four and a six over straight long-off as 17 runs came from it. JP Duminy had earlier pulled a length delivery behind on the leg side for a four. Karthik also reached his half-century in the over.

Karthik was in the groove as he struck a four and then a six down the ground on the trot off Shivam Sharma in the 16th over. In search of quick runs, Duminy launched one over towards deep mid-wicket off Hendricks. He didn’t get enough distance and Glenn Maxwell took the catch at the deep. Duminy was out for 17 runs off 21 deliveries.

Maxwell soon took his second catch as Kedar Jadhav pulled his first delivery towards deep mid-wicket. Sandeep got his wicket. Mayank Agarwal hit his first delivery for a six over long-off, but then got bowled on the next delivery while trying to reverse-sweep. That was Sandeep’s third wicket.

Karthik was the seventh wicket to fall as he mistimed a pull off Hendricks towards Dhawan at deep mid-wicket. Karthik finally got out for 69 off 44 deliveries with seven fours and three sixes. Hendricks then got his third wicket as Parnell was caught by Maxwell at long-on for two runs. In the end, Delhi posted a 164 for seven in their 20 overs.

Brief scores:

Delhi Daredevils 164 for 7 in 20 overs (Kevin Pietersen 49, Dinesh Karthik 69; Sandeep Sharma 3 for 35, Beuran Hendricks 3 for 36) vs Kings XI Punjab.
