Hello and welcome to the LIVE coverage from the final day of the first Test between India and Australia at the Adelaide Oval.
Brief scores: India 250 & 307 beat Australia 235 & 291/9 (Shaun Marsh 60, Nathan Lyon 38*; Mohammed Shami 3/65, Jasprit Bumrah 3/68) by 31 runs
11:09am: We hope you enjoyed our coverage of the first Test at Adelaide. Do stay tuned for all the quotes, reactions and reports on our homepage: https://www.cricketcountry.com/
10:45am: Wow! India have achieved a victory in the opening Test in Australia, a feat that no other Indian team has achieved so far! Still coming to terms with an incredible victory for India, Ashwin got his first wicket on Day 5 and how important was that one, the last wicket of Josh Hazlewood, who finally got the edge to give KL Rahul an easy catch at second slip after Nathan Lyon and Hazlewood were beginning to put pressure on the Indians with the 32-run partnership for the last wicket broken.
India seal victory in a memorable Test against Australia! #AUSvIND pic.twitter.com/Ro0ARaRz9Y

India’s Test wins in Australia:
1977 Melbourne 222 runs
1978 Sydney an innings and 2 runs
1981 Melbourne 59 runs
2003 Adelaide 4 wickets
2008 Perth 72 runs
2018 Adelaide 31 runs #AUSvIND #AUSvsIND— Rajneesh Gupta (@rgcricket) December 10, 2018
10:41AM: THAT’S IT! ASHWIN HAS PICKED THE ONLY WICKET ON DAY 5 AND AS INDIA HAVE CREATED HISTORY IN ADELAIDE, WIN THE MATCH BY 31 RUNS.
10:36am: India are under pressure after Josh Hazlewood smartly guides that shorter delivery by Jasprit Bumrah over slips. It’s going down to the wire!
10:28am: Oh, dear! Ishant Sharma oversteps as India is denied an lbw appeal. DRS shows ‘umpire’s call’ and India seem to be losing it here as Lyon edges it to the boundary one ball later.
A no ball keeps Australia in it!

10:23am: Australia are NOT going to go down without a fight! These two last batsmen now are settling in quite nicely.
Interesting- Since Australia were 84-4 , the partnerships have been 31, 41, 31, 41, 31 .#AusvInd

10:13am: UPDATE: The second session has been extended as India need just 1 wicket for victory.
An interesting perspective on this Test
*India batted for 198.5 overs total
*Aust total is 208 overs and counting – while many of the shots played have drawn criticism, that is a big improvement in crease occupation on many of their matches this year #AUSvIND— Daniel Brettig (@danbrettig) December 10, 2018
Bit perplexed that Kohli has persisted with Ashwin virtually unchanged. Thought he might attack a bit more with pace at both ends.
— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) December 10, 2018
10:03am: FOUR! Nathan Lyon, who picked six wickets in India’s second innings, is beginning to frustrate India with the bat, hitting a well-timed boundary off Jasprit Bumrah to the midwicket fence.
Australia’s ‘weakest’ team ever is expectedly on verge of losing but not before making Indns huff & puff to cross the line..Indn bowlers display lot more commitment than the batters..moral of story..undermine any OZ side at yur Own peril..!!
— Bishan Bedi (@BishanBedi) December 10, 2018
Australia need another 57 runs. Australia conceded 36 extras in the second innings. 21 of them were Byes. #Sundries #AusvInd @7Cricket
— Aakash Chopra (@cricketaakash) December 10, 2018
9:56am: WICKET! Jasprit Bumrah has done it again, picks up his third as Pat Cummins’ patient 28 off 121 balls ends after he edged it to the Indian captain Virat Kohli at second slip.
9 down! 1 more to go #AUSvIND pic.twitter.com/N8wS6h4NWF

WICKET: Cummins edges one to Kohli. India need one more wicket for the win.#AUSvIND #FoxCricket pic.twitter.com/aftz5qbFng

India has never won the first test of a series in Australia. That will change today. But India has had to huff and puff for it.
— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) December 10, 2018
9:46am: FOUR! First boundary for Nathan Lyon, this one, a cracking shot through cover point off Jasprit Bumrah.
Partnerships today 31, 41, 31, 41 and now 27. Each time it seems one is developing, India pull it back, then another starts. Been a fascinating day of test cricket.
— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) December 10, 2018
9:38am: DROPPED! Rishabh Pant has dropped one behind, diving the right side, but was too late to move. It just jumped out of his hand. He may have probably dropped the world record as well. Nathan Lyon survives.
DROPPED: Pant drops Lyon. It would’ve given Pant the Test record for dismissals.#AUSvIND #FoxCricket pic.twitter.com/5wuCyd5NtK
— Fox Cricket (@FoxCricket) December 10, 2018
India have had to wait ten years for a Test victory in Australia and they are being made to wait just a little bit longer. Very few away Test wins come easy and especially not in Australia; the lower order have resisted admirably today. #AUSvIND

9:31am: Rishabh Pant equals a world record. Here’s more…

No word yet on Tim Paine’s troubled right index finger, which was treated and strapped during his innings. He played through a break to another finger in Johannesburg earlier this year, but this one is highly problematic #AusvInd
— Daniel Brettig (@danbrettig) December 10, 2018
9:25am: WICKET! Mohammed Shami has broken the Cummins-Starc partnership which was beginning to frustrate India. Starc went for the outside off delivery, got the edge and Pant, who has taken his 11th catch, has entered the record books to equal the most number of catches in a Test, a feat earlier achieved by AB de Villiers and Jack Russell.
OUT! Starc’s stand comes to an end. He’s caught behind for 28. Shami produces the breakthrough.
Australia still need another 95 runs. India need two more wickets.

9:18am: Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins partnership stands at 41. If they are able to carry on for the next 10 overs, then Virat Kohli and Co. will start to worry a bit.
Aust are under 100 required, midway through day 5. Somewhere Bill Lawry is saying “they’re close enough if they’re good enough…” #AusvInd
— Daniel Brettig (@danbrettig) December 10, 2018
9:05am: FOUR! Starc has slapped that one hard to the cover boundary, that will do his confidence a world of good after facing 35 deliveries. The Cummins-Starc partnership has now yielded 31 runs.
It’s been a day where wickets have been hard to come. If these two put on another 30, Virat will start to worry a bit. Expect pace at both ends for a while
— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) December 10, 2018
9:02am: Play and a miss! Pat Cummins goes for it, but is unable to connect.
8:53am: FOUR! Cummins edges it off Shami and it runs between second slip and gully again to the boundary. Valuable runs, this, for Australia. They don’t care how they come, so long as they keep coming.
Classy shot from Pat Cummins!

8:49am: MAIDEN! Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc are not going to go down without a fight, Ravichandran Ashwin has bowled another maiden over, his 10th in the second innings.
8:44am: FOUR! Mitchell Starc has begun throwing his bat around, this time he found some luck off Jasprit Bumrah, with a thick edge flying up over gully and away to the third man boundary.
8:41am: Meanwhile, young India opener Prithvi Shaw seems to be recovering well. Will he play at Perth? Here’s more…
ALSO READ: Target Boxing Day Test, Prithvi Shaw resumes running as rehabilitation continues
8:38am: Mitchell Starc has joined Pat Cummins in the middle and the duo are rotating the strike really well.
8:27am: OUCH! Mitchell Starc has been hit on the helmet by a Jasprit Bumrah bouncer. The doc is on the field to check whether he’s ok, he looks to be fine, Bumrah too checks on him.
8:21am: STAT: Rishahb Pant has equalled Wridhiman Saha’s record for the most number of catches by a wicketkeeper in a Test match. Pant has picked 10 catches.
What a Test for fans of catches.
20 consecutive wickets have been catches.
10 catches by Pant – one more will tie the record for most catches in a Test, jointly held by AB de Villiers and Jack Russell.
32 catches in all so far – the record for most catches in a Test is 33.— Andy Zaltzman (@ZaltzCricket) December 10, 2018
8:16am: BIG WICKET! Jasprit Bumrah, who had got Shaun Marsh with a ripper earlier, now has the big wicket of captain Tim Paine, who has skied a pull shot, but ended up in Rishabh Pant taking an easy catch behind. Paine departed for 41 and with his dismissal, Australia’s hopes are now shattered!
@Jaspritbumrah93 must surely be the most awkward and difficult fast bowler to play in current cricket. Short run up and unorthodox action, generates hot pace and disconcerting bounce
— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) December 10, 2018
8:12am: MAIDEN! Ravichandran Ashwin began proceedings and bowled a maiden over just after lunch. The Tim Paine-Pat Cummins partnership stands at 30.
Stumps: India are ahead! But cannot afford to be complacent with Tim Paine and Pat Cummins still fighting hard. Resuming the day, India got the early breakthrough with the Shaun Marsh-Travis Head key partnership broken after Ishant Sharma’s snorter cramped Head for room as he departed for 14. Jasprit Bumrah’s ripper got the dangerous Marsh for 60. India in control at the moment, they are just four wickets short of a historic win. A thrilling post-lunch session awaits…

7:25am: Ravichandran Ashwin will operate with the new ball from the other end and almost missed to strike with the wicket of Pat Cummins, who almost hit it onto the stumps.
7:19am: India have taken the second new ball and look to get a wicket before lunch. Ishant Sharma to have the first crack.
Australia not giving up without a fight. In fact, there will be trepidations in the Indian camp that wickets are taking so long to come. New ball taken now. Could work to advantage of either team
— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) December 10, 2018
7:12am: FOUR! Tim Paine leading the charge here, Mohammed Shami drifting away to the leg side and Paine tickles it nicely to the fine-leg boundary.
7:09am: INJURY CONCERN! Rohit Sharma is off the field after jarring his back while fielding. Hopefully, he’s OK.
7:06am: STAT: It’s been 13 years, one month and nine days since Tim Paine scored his first and till date, the only first-class century.
7:00am: The Australian captain Tim Paine has been pushing his partner for the extra runs, knows that every run from hereon is gold dust.
6:56am: Kohli unhappy with the review and questions Nigel Llong, who says the ball came off the wrist and not the glove. The Indian captain does not probe further.
6:47am: REVIEWS! With two new right-handers at the crease, Ravichandran Ashwin has been introduced straight into attack and straight away has put Pat Cummins under the pump for a caught behind review. However, it was the pad. Cummins survived another review, three balls later, this time taken by Australia, after Nigel Llong’s decision was overturned for the fourth time in the match.

6:41am: BIG WICKET! Jasprit Bumrah gets the big fish, it’s Shaun Marsh, who was looking to defend that one, but a perfect line and length, probing outside off, saw Marsh get a faint nick to depart for a well-played 60.

6:26am: Murali Vijay has been introduced into the attack with the Indian players, quite vocal on the field, keen on him picking up a wicket. This Tim Paine-Shaun Marsh partnership has yielded 39 runs.
6:22am: BOWLING CHANGE! Just after drinks Jasprit Bumrah, who had a sore shoulder yesterday, has been introduced into the attack
6:11am: DROPPED! Rishabh Pant has put down a tough chance, dives to his left and it just eludes him after Mohammed Shami bowled a good shorter one to Tim Paine, but it was angled down to leg.
Ashwin needs to be patient to Marsh: this is a day five pitch taking decent turn & he has a great record against lefties. Despite this he has changed from over to round the wicket multiple times today already. Lyon showed the value of persistently plugging away. #AUSvIND

6:04am: Shaun Marsh is looking in good touch and Australia will want him to carry on if they are to get to the end of this run chase. Marsh has been ticking the scoreboard nicely.
5:57am: Meanwhile, Mark Butcher, during commentary says that if Australia want to engage in a record run-chase, this is the pitch they will want to do it on. Sunil Gavaskar, the other commentator, agrees. Nothing in the drop-in pitch at Adelaide, Indian bowlers have just been spot on!
5:54am: Ravichandran Ashwin was not so convinced about Paine getting the edge, after he tossed it up nicely, but the Australian captain had hit the ground.

5:46am: BOWLING CHANGE! After getting that early breakthrough, Ishant Sharma has been given a breather with Mohammed Shami, who picked up two wickets yesterday, introduced into the attack.
5:42am: FOUR! The Australian captain Tim Paine is out in the middle with a huge job at hand. The intent is very clear from him, pouncing on this rare loose delivery from Ishant Sharma.

5:31am: BIG WICKET! India have got the early breakthrough of the morning and what a delivery it was from Ishant Sharma, banged it in, and Travis Head, Australia’s highest run scorer in the first innings, struggles to defend that one, got cramped up for room and ended up giving an easy catch to Ajinkya Rahane at gully. Head departs for 14.

Ishant removes Head. That’s the thing about this Indian bowling attack….it’s no longer revolving around one or two bowlers irrespective of the conditions. Pacers take wickets at home…spinners overseas too. #AusvInd #7cricket @Channel7 @1116sen

5:21am: Good contest rolling out here between Ashwin and Marsh. Ashwin bowling a tight line such that if Marsh misses, then he’s out lbw. India will not want this partnership to gain ground.
5:11am: How did that even miss getting the edge of Shaun Marsh’s willow? Perfect line, length, and it beats Marsh.
5:05am: Ishant Sharma having problems with this line, overstepping again. Remember what happened yesterday? Aaron Finch got a reprieve for a plumb lbw dismissal after Ishant overstepped. He cannot do that today!

India are in a commanding position to script a historic win at Adelaide thus becoming the first Indian side to win an opening Test in Australia. The hosts are engaged in a historic run chase. The only successful fourth innings Test run chase of more than 300 at Adelaide coming in 1902 when the hosts made 315 to beat England.
Australia’s fate are resting on the shoulders of Shaun Marsh and their first innings highest run-scorer, Travis Head, who will have to build on their existing 20-run partnership on a turning Day 5 pitch.
