Shreyas Iyer, leading from the front, kept his nerve as Delhi Capitals (DC) beat Kings XI Punjab (KXIP)  by five wickets in the 37th match of the IPL 2019 at the Feroz Shah Kotla in New Delhi on Saturday.

Chasing 164-run target, DC were cruising with 116/1. But Shikhar Dhawan, who scored 56, got out and the home team had a slide, with Hardus Viljoen scalping two wickets. While Colin Ingram hit Viljoen for three fours in the 18th over to swing the match in DC’s favour. He and Axar Patel got out in the 19th over as KXIP kept themselves in the hunt.

However, with DC needing 6 runs off the final over, skipper Iyer remained calm and sealed DC’s win with two balls to spare.

Earlier, after put in to bat, Chris Gayle’s 69, Mandeep Singh’s 30 and a 12-ball 20-run cameo from the debutant Harpreet Brar guided KXIP to 163.

While Sandeep Lamichhane conceded 40 runs, he managed to scalp three wickets, including that of KL Rahul and Gayle as KXIP had to settle for a below 170-run total.

DC innings:

20th over: Iyer keeps calm. The skipper has done it for DC, who showed some nerves as they closed in on a win. But Iyer, who remained unbeaten on 58, has guided them home with two balls to spare. DC 166/5 (Iyer 58, Rutherford 2)

19th over: Oh dear, DC, what are you doing! Two wickets in an over, one via a run-out. Are they going to crumble again like in the first leg? Shami first removes Ingram and then Axar gets out run out. Amidst all this drama, Iyer has brought up his fifty. DC need 6 off 6 now. DC 158/5 (Iyer 51, Rutherford 1)

18th over: Ingram has takeN on Viljoen. Three fours in an over and DC have moved past 150-run mark with a 13-run over. DC 154/3 (Iyer 49, Ingram 19)

17th over: Just five runs off the over. KXIP are not going to give away easy runs at the end, it seems. DC 141/3 (Iyer 48, Ingram 7)

16th over: Pant has another disappointing outing in the middle as he gets out for six. Viljoen has his second wicket. DC though are still in command with Iyer in the middle. DC 136/3 (Iyer 46, Ingram 5)

15th over: A four each for Iyer and Pant as DC score 10 runs off the 15th over to near 130-run mark. DC 128/2 (Iyer 44, Pant 6)

14th over: Viljoen removes Dhawan for 56. But is it too little too late for KXIP? Slower delivery does Dhawan in. Excellent catch from R Ashwin though as he ran towards his left from mid-wicket. DC 118/2 (Iyer 40, Pant 1)

13th over: Six on the first ball and then three singles, in addition to a wide. DC are having it really easy here. They are cruising without any trouble. DC 111/1 (Dhawan 52 , Iyer 38)

12th over: Fifty for Dhawan! The left-hander has done well to guide DC’s chase. The home team has crossed the 100-run mark and look favourites to win. DC 101/1 (Dhawan 51, Iyer 30)

11th over: Another no-ball as Curran bowls a beamer! KXIP though have only given five off the 11th over. DC 95/1 (Dhawan 49 , Iyer 27)

10th over: 10 runs off the 10th over as Murugan Ashwin concedes three extra runs, bowling wides, KXIP will need to rectify this. The freebies, although due to the dew, like these won’t help their cause. DC 90/1 (Dhawan 46, Iyer 26)

9th over: Ashwin concedes eight runs in his 2nd over. DC have reached the 80-run mark, with Dhawan batting on 40 and skipper Iyer on 25. DC 80/1 (Dhawan 40, Iyer 25)

8th over: Murugan Ashwin has done really well despite bowling a no-ball. Just five runs off his first over. A wicket around the corner or are Dhawan-Iyer are in a no mood to take any unnecessary risks? DC 72/1 (Dhawan 38, Iyer 20)

7th over: Good comeback by Harpreet after giving away 17 runs in his first over. KXIP though will need a couple of wickets to stem the flow of runs. DC 67/1 (Dhawan 36, Iyer 18)

6th over: 8 runs off his first over but R Ashwin has done well to pull things back after conceding four on the first ball of the over. DC, meanwhile, will be more than happy with this start. DC 60/1 (Dhawan 34, Iyer 13)

5th over: 17 runs off Harpeet Brar’s first over! DC have crossed the fifty-run mark as Dhawan and Iyer attack the debutant in his first over. DC 52/1 (Dhawan 29, Iyer 10)

4th over: A couple of fours but KXIP have managed to get their first wicket, courtesy Mandeep’s brilliance in the field to run out Prithvi Shaw. DC 35/1 (Dhawan 21, Iyer 1)

3rd over: 12 runs in an over as Shaw manages to hit a sharp Shami bouncer for a six and Dhawan hits a four in the latter half of the over. DC 24/0 (Shaw 13, Dhawan 11)

2nd over: A missed opportunity and Dhawan survives. Meanwhile, both the openers have managed to hit a four each as DC score 11 off the third over. DC 12/0 (Shaw 6, Dhawan 6)

1st over: Maiden to start the proceedings. Good start for Mohammed Shami. DC 0/0 (Shaw o, Dhawan 0)

KXIP innings:

20th over: Harpreet Brar has ended the KXIP innings on a high. His quickfire 20 off 12 balls has pushed KXIP past 160-run mark. This won’t be an easy total to chase down, gives KXIP a fighting chance. KXIP 163/7 (Harpreet Bra 20, Hardus Viljoen 2)

19th over: Two wides, a crisp four from Harpreet and overall, 10 runs in an over! KXIP have crossed the 150-run mark. KXIP 151/6 (Ashwin 16, Harpreet Brar 13)

18th over: 7 runs off the over as Ashwin manages to find the boundary rope off Rabada’s bowling. KXIP move past 14o-run mark and now that 150-plus total seems likely. KXIP 141/6 (Ashwin 14, Harpreet Brar 7)

17th over: Smart work from Axar, fast work from Pant as DC make sure that Mandeep does not cash in on that dropped catch earlier. Axar sees Mandeep dancing down the wicket, throws one wide and Pant just takes off the bails in a jiffy. KXIP 134/6 (Ashwin 9, Harpreet Brar 5)

16th over: Nine runs from Mishra’s final over. Mandeep has hit a four right after he was dropped. Will that drop prove costly to DC? KXIP 127/5 (Mandeep 29, Ashwin 8)

15th over: Oh dear! Lamichhane could have got his fourth wicket of the night but Rabada has dropped a catch. Mandeep survives. KXIP can still hope to go past 150 with Mandeep around. KXIP 118/5 (Mandeep 22, Ashwin 6)

14th over: Five runs off Mishra’s third over. He had gone for 27 in his first two but Gayle’s fall seems to have helped him find his groove. Whatever it is, DC will look to bowl a few more overs like these and push KXIP on the backfoot. KXIP 111/5 (Mandeep 20, Ashwin 1)

13th over: Big breakthrough! Lamichhane has struck big, really big. Chris Gayle did not really time the big hit to perfection and Colin Ingram and Axar’s tag-team work helps DC see Gayle’s back. The leggie has also dismissed Sam Curran in the same over. DC have derailed KXIP innings. KXIP 106/5 (Mandeep 16, Ashwin 0)

12th over: Hundred up for KXIP but Rabada has given just three runs in his second over. The last two overs have cost DC only eight runs. A calm before the storm or a sign of things to come? KXIP 100/3 (Gayle 63, Mandeep 16)

11th over: Tight start from Sherfane Rutherford here! Just five runs off his first over. DC will need these kind of overs if they can’t get the wickets.  KXIP near hundred. KXIP 97/3 (Gayle 61, Mandeep 15)

10th over: Mandeep joins the six-hitting party now as KXIP score 10 off 10. KXIP 92/3 (Gayle 58, Mandeep 13)

9th over: Fifty for Gayle! No matter what happens at the other end, Gayle will go big. That’s his style and it’s doing wonders for him. He takes on Mishra yet again, hitting him for two sixes to bring up his fifty. KXIP 82/3 (Gayle 57, Mandeep 4)

8th over: Axar Patel has struck in his first over as David Miller gets out for 7. Gayle has been doing a fine job but the third KXIP batsman has failed to score big. KXIP 66/3 (Gayle 43, Mandeep 2)

7th over: 11 runs off the over! Amit Mishra bowls a short ball and Gayle has ruined what was a decent over till then. Huge six to end the 7th over. He is on a roll here, isn’t he? KXIP 61/2 (Gayle 40, Miller 7)

6th over: Fifty up for KXIP! While Rahul and Mayank have failed, Gayle’s brisk start has helped KXIP cross the fifty-run mark in the powerplay. The big-hitting West Indian has so far hit 6 fours and a six in his 17-ball stay in the middle. KXIP 50/2 (Gayle 32, Miller 4)

5th over: Rabada has struck in his first over as KXIP have lost their second wicket. Mayank gave it away advancing down the track too early. Rabada cramped him for room and the KXIP batsman has to go. KXIP 46/2 (Gayle 28, Miller 4)

4th over: 4, 0, 4, 0, 4, 4! Chris Gayle has taken on Lamichhane and how. 16 runs off the fourth over and KXIP have zoomed past 40-run mark. Worrying signs for DC or not yet? KXIP 42/1 (Gayle 28, Mayank 2)

3rd over: Gayle has seen enough, it seems. He takes on Ishant and in some style. First a four and then a six, that sails out of the ground. That’s brute. KXIP score 12 runs off the third over. KXIP 26/1 (Gayle 12, Mayank 2)

2nd over: One hand coming off the grip but KL Rahul has still managed to hit a six and a four off Lamichhane. But it’s the bowler who has the final laugh as Rahul is out stumps. DC won’t mind this start. KXIP 14/1 (Gayle 1, Mayank 1)

1st over: Watchful start from both the KXIP openers. Three runs from the first over bowled by Ishant Sharma, with Rahul scoring two and Chris Gayle scoring 1. KXIP 3/0 (Rahul 2, Gayle 1)

07.45 PM: Here’s what the captains – Iyer and R Ashwin – said at the toss.

R Ashwin: For starters, bat well when we bat first. One of the days to not make a decision. We were also looking to bowl first. We have an exciting change in Harpreet Brar – he bowls a bit of left-arm mystery spin. There is going to be dew, so we needed an extra bowler and Brar fits in as he can bat as well. Right time to bring Sam back in as he is our sixth bowling option.

Iyer: We will bowl first. Looking at the outfield it is getting a bit dewy and it will only get worse, depending on that we have decided bowl first. We made some mistakes in the previous games and have rectified it. We are backing on chasing any total. We need to be positive in our approach. If you see the wicket, it is turning a lot and we need to be positive. We have three changes – Ingram, Lamichhane and Rutherford come in.

07.43 PM: Check out the playing XIs.

DC: Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer (captain), Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper), Colin Ingram, Sherfane Rutherford, Axar Patel, Kagiso Rabada, Amit Mishra, Sandeep Lamichhane, Ishant Sharma

KXIP: Lokesh Rahul (wicketkeeper), Chris Gayle, Mayank Agarwal, David Miller, Mandeep Singh, Ravichandran Ashwin (captain), Sam Curran, Harpreet Brar, Murugan Ashwin, Hardus Viljoen, Mohammed Shami

07.37 PM: TOSS UPDATE

Shreyas Iyer has won the toss and DC have elected to bowl against KXIP.

07.15 PM: DC have struggled to win at home. Out of four matches at Feroz Shah Kotla this IPL season, they have only managed to win one and that too in Super Over. Can they stop that losing streak?

07.00 PM: DC fans are out their in large numbers to support the home team at Kotla.

06.45 PM: David Miller is all set for a Northern Derby as Delhi Capitals host KXIP at Kotla.

06.30 PM: Clearly, there are plenty of spinners in the KXIP outfit. But who will be a part of the playing XI tonight?

6.15 PM: No shortage of advice for Delhi Capitals players as they seek return to winning ways.

Team News

DELHI CAPITALS

On a slow and low Kotla surface, Delhi’s spinners bowled well against Mumbai but their batsmen failed spectacularly when chasing 169. They should persist with Axar Patel and Amit Mishra – who became the first Indian to take 150 wickets in the IPL – and perhaps drop one of Chris Morris or Keemo Paul to accommodate the Nepal legspinner, Sandeep Lamichhane. Shreyas Iyer was concerned about Delhi’s death-overs bowling, so it could be there are changes.

Another failure for Prithvi Shaw – one of the flops of IPL this season – could see his India Under-19 team-mate Manjot Kalra get a chance.

Kings XI Punjab

Mujeeb Ur Rahman should keep his spot given the conditions at the Kotla.

PREVIEW

After three wins in a row, Delhi Capitals were beaten by 40 runs by Mumbai Indians at the Kotla on Thursday and 48 hours later they are back at the venue to try and stop Kings XI Punjab who are level on points and one spot behind them on the IPL 2019 points table.

Game 37 of IPL 12 pits the two teams against each other on Saturday, with both looking to move up the ladder.

Punjab’s fortunes have oscillated between the sublime and the mediocre. They have not progressed beyond two wins in a row, and have lost three of their last five matches.

The last time these two teams met, Delhi lost seven wickets for eight runs with Sam Curran taking a hat-trick.
