Morne Morkel bowled the third over of the innings for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2014 Qualifier 1. Wriddhiman Saha and Manan Vohra were tentative after the early loss of Virender Sehwag’s wicket. Saha hit a six off the final ball to take KXIP to 17 for one after three overs.
Umesh Yadav came on to bowl the second over of the innings, and tasted success right away. Virender Sehwag struck a short and wide ball straight to Shakib at point. Umesh followed up the over very well, by conceding just three runs including a wide ball.
Morne Morkel started off proceedings to Virender Sehwag, who took first strike. Sehwag started positively for KXIP by hitting Morkel in the air over covers first ball. However, only five runs were scored off the first over. Manan Vohra edged to Yusuf Pathan in the slips but it fell just short.
Earlier, Ryan ten Doeshchate struck a few meaty blows before being caught at the boundary in the penultimate over of the innings, bowled by Mitchell Johnson. Jonson conceded just three off the over. Three boundaries by Piyush Chawla in the final over bowled by Parvinder Awana pushed KKR to a competitive total in a high-pressure match.
Earlier, George Bailey won the toss and elected to field first. Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) went in with the same team. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) made just the one change, as leg-spinner Piyush Chawla came in to the side at the expense of R Vinay Kumar.
