Delhi and Punjab played their first game in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2018 at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium, New Delhi.
Delhi’s newly appointed captain, Pradeep Sangwan, elected to field first. Manan Vohra and Mandeep Singh added a fifty-run opening stand. Mandeep was soon out to Pawan Negi, but Vora went on to hit 74 of 50 balls. Yuvraj Singh scored an unbeaten 50, taking Punjab’s total to 170.
Negi took two wickets in his two overs, whereas Delhi’s star bowlers in Ranji trophy, Navdeep Siani and Kulwant Khejroliya, went wicketless.
Gautam Gambhir and former captain Rishabh Pant started off strongly with a 73-run opening partnership. Gambhir fought hard with his 66 until he was run out by Siddharth Kaul a ball before the last over. Negi and Lalit Yadav could not finish it for Delhi as they lost to Punjab by 2 runs.
Punjab, with this win, jumped to the second spot in the North Zone group behind Services.
