But they came back hard in the games thereafter. They played a close contest against Zimbabwe and emerged victorious by 20 runs in the end. They then faced the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and won comfortably by 129 runs. But their most prized victory came when they beat South Africa in the next match by 29 runs in a rain curtailed match. Finally they beat Ireland in their last group stage match to win by seven wickets.
Australia, on the other hand, never let arise any doubts in terms of qualification. In their first game, they beat England by massive 111 runs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Their next game was against Bangladesh but Australia missed a chance to make it two in two because of rain. Australia’s next game was against their neighbours and co-hosts New Zealand. Australia’s next match was against Afghanistan and they gave the Asian side a 275-run mauling in the match — biggest margin of victory in any World Cup and the second biggest overall in terms of runs.
