CSK never really got going in the chase as MI remained on top, from the first over, while defending the total. While Lasith Malinga scalped four wickets, Krunal Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah scalped two wickets each as CSK were bundled out for 109 in 17.4 overs.

16th over: Malinga to bowl his third over! MI is going for a kill here! He strikes. Bravo is gone and that pretty much the end. There’s no unlikely turnaround from here for CSK. CSK 99/7 (Bravo 20, Santner 14)

15th over: Rahil Chahar returns! There is a four for CSK as Chahar concedes 8 runs from his over. CSK move closer to ninety-run mark but it is MI who are control. CSK 88/6 (Bravo 17, Santner 6)

14th over: Hardik returns! 10 runs off the over but CSK will need many more of these overs and they dont have many batsmen who can pull of a heist, CSK 80/6 (Bravo 11, Santner 4)

13th over: Roy returns! four runs from his second over. MI are not giving away anything. This is some show from the Rohit Sharma and Co. CSK 70/6 (Bravo 5, Santner 2)

12th over: Bumrah returns! He strikes to remove Vijay. CSK six down. Was that a clean catch? Soft signal is out and the third umpire does not seem to have a conclusive evidence to rule otherwise. CSK dug out ain’t too pleased.  Is this, as the cliche goes, the final nail in the coffin? CSK 66/6 (Bravo 3, Santner 0)

11th over: Rahul Chahar in his third over! Just four runs off this over. CSK need a quick rebuilding but they also need some quick runs. Will MI cash in on this opportunity or will CSK get through this too? CSK 64/5 (Vijay 38, Bravo 3)

4th over: Hardik into the attack! CSK now lose Raina in chase! Big big wicket! Vijay, meanwhile, is in a mood to put up a show here. A six over the bowler’s head and a four over the backward square leg. CSK 34/2 (Vijay 24, Rayudu o)

1st over: Malinga with the new ball! Early strike for Mumbai Indians as Malinga removes Shane Watson in the first over. MI will be more than happy with this start, CSK not really. CSK 9/1 (Raina 0, Murali Vijay 1)

MI innings:

20th over: Bravo to bowl the last over! 17 runs off the final over. Hardik Pandya has gone after Bravo in the last over and helped MI cross the 150-run mark. A much-needed momentum at the end but are they still 10-15 runs short from what they could have achieved after a solid first ten overs. MI 155/4 (Hardik 23, Pollard 13)

19th over: Chahar to bowl the penultimate over! 10 runs off it as Chahar completes his spell. A rather below-par night for him. MI 138/4 (Hardik 11, Pollard 8)

18th over: Bravo back at the business end! 6 runs. He knows a thing or two about bowling at the death, this Dwayne Bravo. Slower deliveries, yorkers and what not! MI 128/4 (Hardik 8, Pollard 1)

17th over: Santner to bowl his final over! Big big wicket! CSK strike just after Rohit has hit a few big blows in the last over. He perishes for 67 as Santner scalps his second wicket. MI in trouble. Onus now on Hardik. Just a run in the 17th over. MI 122/4 (Hardik 4, Pollard 0)

16th over: Tahir into his final over! Rohit goes big, he is shifting gears, clearly. A much-needed big over for MI. 16 runs off it. Two fours and a six. MI move past 120-run mark. MI 121/3 (Rohit 67, Hardik 3)

12th over: Bravo continues! 7 runs off the over MI one away from the hundred and Rohit one away from his fifty! Ominous signs for CSK? Will Rohit go big after fifty? MI 99/1 (Rohit 49, Lewis 32)

07.32 PM: TEAM NEWS! With Dhoni unwell and not playing the game and Sam Billings back to England following an injury, Ambati Rayudu will keep wickets for CSK. Coming to MI’s playing XI, Anukul Roy, who is making his IPL debut, and Evin Lewis are picked.

Playing XIs for both the teams:

CSK: Shane Watson, Murali Vijay, Suresh Raina (captain), Ambati Rayudu (wicketkeeper), Dhruv Shorey, Kedar Jadhav, Dwayne Bravo, Mitchell Santner, Deepak Chahar, Harbhajan Singh, Imran Tahir

MI: Quinton de Kock (wicketkeeper), Evin Lewis, Rohit Sharma (captain), Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Anukul Roy, Rahul Chahar, Lasith Malinga, Jasprit Bumrah

07.30 PM: Here’s what the captains said at the toss

Rohit Sharma: I would have chased too as dew comes in the second half which makes batting easier. The first half of the tournament was bit up and down . But now we know exactly what we need to know as a team. It is always challenging to play cricket here. We have made two changes in our team. Evin Lewis and Anukul Roy in place of Ben Cutting and Mayank Markande.

Suresh Raina: We will bowl first, wicket still looks the same. I think dew will be the factor. MS and Jaddu are not well, they have fever and they will miss today’s game. We have three changes: MS, Jaddu and one more player (Faf du Plessis) is not playing. Dhruv Shorey, Murali Vijay and Santner comes in.

07.29 PM: TOSS and TEAM UPDATE! MS Dhoni won’t feature in tonight’s game. Suresh Raina is leading the side and CSK have elected to bowl against MI.

07.20: Pitch update: The pitch for this game will be the same which was used for CSK’s game against RCB. Remember, RCB were bundled out for 70.

Darren Ganga on the pitch: “The pitch today was used for the first match against RCB in the opening match of the IPL when RCB could only score 70. This is the same pitch which was used for the last match against SRH when they scored 175. Spin will play a vital role again and both teams are likely to go in with three spinners on this pitch.”

07.15 PM: BIG NEWS! MS Dhoni may miss this game. Clearly, he is not going to risk anything with the World Cup around the corner.

07.15 PM: What kind of a pitch will there be for this game?

After several slow and low surfaces at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, two of which came in for criticism from Dhoni himself, the last pitch for CSK’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad was far more conducive to batting. On Tuesday, SRH made 175/3 in 20 overs and CSK chased it down with a ball to spare.

07.00 PM: El Clasico, round two

Fact: CSK have not last a match at home this season. Fact: CSK have lost five of their last seven matches against MI.

06.45 PM: While Quinton de Kock has fired, Rohit Sharma’s form is a concern

The MI captain has not played one definitive innings this IPL. Nine matches, 228 runs with a best of 48. Something has to give.

While the team have found leading roles from Quinton de Kock and Hardik Pandya, Rohit’s lack of runs is a concern. In his favourite match of the tournament, and with the playoffs nearing, could this be the day that Rohit gets a big score?

06.30 PM: Where are MI in the race to the playoffs?

Mumbai are at third place with 12 points, behind Delhi Capitals who have 14. A win over CSK will take MI level with Delhi.

06.15 PM: CSK on verge of playoffs

Dhoni’s team needs one win to confirm their place in the IPL 2019 playoffs. With 16 points from 11 matches, CSK sit on top of the points table and two more points will take them into the next stage.

06.00 PM: How these two teams – CSK and MI – have fared against each other? Here’s their IPL head-to-head record

In 25 matches between these two teams, Mumbai ave won 14 and and Chennai 11.

CSK vs MI PREDICTION: With an unbeaten home record this season, a better spin attack, Watson returning to form and MS Dhoni being in good nick, CSK are favourites to beat Mumbai.

Cricket live score, MI vs CSK: Fact: CSK have not last a match at home this season. Fact: CSK have lost five of their last seven matches against MI.

So then, which way will the tide turn? Can Rohit Sharma‘s Mumbai succeed at CSK’s fortress, the MA Chidambaram Stadium? Or will MS Dhoni‘s yellow brigade give their legion . of fans another reason to cheer at Chepauk?

Earlier this month, before MI hosted CSK at the Wankhede Stadium in a match which the home team won, Rohit termed MI vs CSK as the El Clasico of the IPL. The fans on both side will not dispute such a statement, for Mumbai and Chennai is arguably the hottest competition in the league.

CSK vs MI match preview:

Having returned to winning ways with a win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will now take on Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 44th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday.

The Rohit Sharma-led unit is coming into this game after enjoying a four-day breakfollowing their defeat against Rajasthan Royals (RR). While MI defeated MS Dhoni-led CSK in the first leg of the matches of this season, CSK will look to return the favour as they host MI.

CSK though will have some issues to sort. Although the duo of Dwayne Bravo and Deepak Chahar bowled well in their last game, the spinners – Harbhajan Singh, despite his two wickets against SRH and Imran Tahir struggled to stem the flow of runs.

Coming to their batting, Shane Watson’s return to form and Suresh Raina coming in with a crucial 38 in the previous game is a welcome sign. However, the form of Faf du Plessis, Ambati Rayudu and Kedar Jadhav remains a concern for the defending champions. An area where MI will look to target. (ALSO READ: IPL 2019, CSK vs SRH: Pandey cashes in, Watson proves his worth and other talking points)

MI though too have their batting problems to solve. While Quinton de Kock has been extremely consistent and Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya have played some blitz, the likes of Rohit Sharma, Krunal Pandya and Kieron Pollard have struggled to find consistency. (ALSO READ: IPL 2019: I asked MS Dhoni if he liked my version of the helicopter shot, he said it was good: Hardik Pandya)

What shall please MI is the way in which Rahul Chahar has performed. The 19-year-old leg-spinner has nine wickets in seven matches this season, at an economy rate of 6.61. The leader of their bowling attack though will be Jasprit Bumrah. The right-arm pacer, who has 11 wickets against his name, will be key as MI will try and keep Watson, at the top, and Dhoni, who turned the clock to hammer unbeaten 84 off 48 balls, at the end, in check.
