Kings XI Punjab innings: (Target 161)

Summary: A century stand by KL Rahul and Sarfaraz Khan (117 runs for the third wicket) still was insufficient for Kings XI Punjab with CSK topping the table following a 22-run victory. Rahul and Sarfaraz batted well, but should have attacked the spinners once they settled in. Victory for CSK means that they bounced back following the loss to Mumbai, while Ashwin and Co. will have to go back to the drawing board to see what went wrong.  Harbhajan Singh was the pick of the CSK bowlers with two for 17 in his 4 overs.

20th over: IT’S ALL OVER! Kuggeleijn although expensive, took another wicket, Sarfaraz had to walk back after a fine 67, but he couldn’t help his side to victory as CSK win by 22 runs to top the table. 

19th over: OH, NO! Deepak Chahar is back into the attack and he’s made a meal of this over, bowling successive no-balls. Sarfaraz capitalising on it nicely. But he’s made it count, and CLEANED UP DAVID MILLER FOR just 6 runs. Mandeep Singh is the new batsman. KXIP need 26 from the last over, Sarfaraz 65.

18th over: WICKET! Scott Kuggeleijn is back into the attack bowling his third over. Rahul pulls the bowler, but he finds Ravindra Jadeja in the deep and a fine innings by KL Rahul comes to an end, departs for 55. It’s over to new batsman David Miller. 7 runs in this over. 17th over: Imran Tahir concedes just 5 runs this over. One of these two needs to go big before it’s too late! KXIP 115/2 (Sarfaraz 54, Rahul 54)

16th over: Harbhajan Singh will continue, and this time KL Rahul brings up his half-century, his 12th in the history of the tournament, Rahul and Sarfaraz have also brought up the 100-run partnership for the third wicket. Harbhajan’s final over goes for 5 runs. KXIP 110/2 (Sarfaraz 52, Rahul 51)

15th over: FIFTY! What a fine innings by Sarfaraz Khan, who has brought up his maiden IPL fifty in 42 balls. This over by Imran Tahir goes for 5 runs. KXIP 105/2 (Sarfaraz 51, Rahul 47)

13th over: Jadeja returns, CSK are under the pump. What a massive moment in the game. MS Dhoni with a piece of brilliance behind the stumps. 12th over: Here’s the debutante Scott Kuggeleijn in his second over, and Sarfaraz has taken him head one, carting one boundary and a a huge SIX over the long-off boundary. 16 runs in this over, Kuggeleijn not having a good debut. KXIP 91/2 (Sarfraz 45, Rahul 39)

5th over: FOURS! Deepak Chahar to continue, and he’s whacked for a boundary first up by KL Rahul. Glorious shot by Rahul, who drives this one elegantly past mid-on. Rahul also tonked a huge SIX and followed it up with another boundary, with this over going for 16 runs. KXIP 35/2 (Rahul 23, Sarfaraz 6)

4th over: Harbhajan into his next over, and he’s gone for 8 runs in this over. KXIP 19/2 (Rahul 8, Sarfaraz 5)

3rd over: Deepak Chahar to continue bowling in his next over and he’s gone for just 4 runs. KXIP 11/2 (Sarfaraz 3, Rahul 2)

2nd over: BIG WICKETS! Harbhajan Singh comes into the attack and strikes immediately. It’s the big wicket of the Universe Boss, Chris Gayle, who edged it behind to Dhoni. Gayle departs for just 5. Bhajji doesn’t end there and has taken another wicket of Mayank Agarwal, who departs for a duck. Two wickets in this maiden wicket. Sarfaraz Khan is the new batsman. KXIP 7/2 (Rahul 1)

1st over: Deepak Chahar to open the bowling for CSK. Punjab openers Chris Gayle and KL Rahul are ready. Prodigious movement for Chahar, Gayle goes hard at it, but gets a thick outside edge and it races away to the third man boundary. KXIP 7/0 (Gayle 5, Rahul 1)

Chennai Super Kings innings:

6.51 pm: Playing in his first game of the season, the half-centurion for CSK, Faf du Plessis is happy he could capitalise on the opportunity. Here’s what he had to say.

“Just glad to be playing back in the homeground. I’ve been waiting in the sidelines and it is always good to get an opportunity; I had been hitting the ball well in the nets. I think we have a par score, when I got out I told the boys that 160 would be a good score. Pace off the ball is the hard option and we have some good spinners. When I was batting, the wicket was a bit two-paced, the ball was stopping and turning. We have an extra spinner with us as well.”

Summary: CSK were off to a flying start with openers Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis forging 56 runs, but then Punjab and in particular captain Ravichandran Ashwin pulled things back with three wickets, two of them coming in succession, but then a fine cameo from ‘Captain Cool’ MS Dhoni, an unbeaten 37 off 23 that included four boundaries and one six, took CSK to 160/3. At one point of time, the hosts were not even looking at 150, but now they can well defend this target on a turning pitch. Mind you, then have Harbhajan, Tahir and Jadeja, that’s 30 overs of quality spin. An exciting run-chase coming right up. Stay tuned.

20th over: BOOM! Length ball by Mohammed Shami and Rayudu dispatches it over the long-on boundary for a SIX. CSK have crossed the 150-run mark. THAT’S IT, CSK finish at 160/3. Dhoni remains unbeaten on 37, while Rayudu on 21

19th over: Sam Curran bowling his final over. Dhoni breaks the shackles, the first hit was vintage MSD, stands and delivers, Curran missed the length by a  little margin and it was smacked over deep square leg. Dhoni laos smashed two boundaries, this over yielding 19 runs. CSK 146/3 (Dhoni 31, Rayudu 13)

18th over: Run-scoring is getting really tough out there. With Imran Tahir, Harbhajan Singh and Ravindra Jadeja, guess even a 130-run target would be enough for CSK to defend, right? Here’s Tye into the attack. 11 runs from this over including a boundary by MS Dhoni. CSK 128/3 (Dhoni 14, Rayudu 12)

17th over: Sam Curran back into the attack to bowl his third over. Brilliant over by Curran, only six from it. CSK 116/3 (Rayudu 10, Dhoni 6)

14th over: Ravichandran Ashwin has taken two in two, and he’s on a HAT-TRICK! Chaos at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. The KXIP captain first had the dangerman Faf du Plessis caught at long-on by David Miller. Faf departed for a well-played 54. Ashwin then cleaned up Raina in the delivery. Careless shot by Raina, who departed for just 17. Ambati Rayudu, the new man at the crease, denied Ashwin his ha-trick after he brought the bat face down early, CSK 101/3 (Rayudu 1, MS Dhoni 0)

13th over: FIFTY! Faf du Plessis brings up his half-century with a boundary and a SIX, what a way to get to his fifty off 33 balls. He’s holding the fort out there. 11 runs of this Murugan Ashwin over. CSK 98/1 (Du Plessis 53, Raina 16)

12th over: Ravichandran Ashwin returns and Du Plessis picks out the carrom ball early, lifting the ball over his head for a maximum. 9 runs from the over. CSK 87/1 (Du Plessis 45, Raina 14)

11th over: Murugan Ashwin with a clever mixture of variations keeps the CSK batsmen thinking. A couple and five singles from his third over. CSK 78/1 (Du Plessis 38, Raina 12)

10th over: Andrew Tye strays and Suresh Raina steers the ball away to third man region for his first boundary. 7 runs from it. CSK 71/1 (Du Plessis 34, Raina 9)

9th over: Murugan Ashwin to continue with his second over, and another brilliant over from the leggie, just 4 runs coming from it. CSK 64/1 (Du Plessis 33, Raina 3)

8th over: BIG WICKET! From the other end, the real Ashwin is back into the attack and strikes first blood with the help of the carrom ball, Watson goes against the spin and is picked by Sam Curran at cow corner. The veteran Australian departs for 26. Suresh Raina has joined Du Plessis in the middle. Good over this by Ashwin and KXIP, 5 runs and the wicket of Watson. CSK 60/1 (Du Plessis 31, Raina 1)

4th over: BOWLING CHANGE: Sam, the left-arm pacer, comes into the attack. The young Englishman has bowled a good first over, just the 3 runs off it. CSK 29/0 (Du Plessis 18, Watson 10)

3rd over: Shami to continue and this time, it’s Du Plessis, who gets going, smashing the Indian for back-to-back boundaries after outfoxing Shami coming down the pitch and caps it off with a towering SIX. 16 runs in this over. CSK 26/0 (Du Plessis 17, Watson 8)

2nd over: Ravichandran Ashwin has brought himself early on into the attack, but Shane Watson isn’t going to hold on and smashed the KXIP for the first boundary through square leg. Six runs come off Ashwin’s first over. CSK 10/2 (Watson 7, Du Plessis 2)

1st over: Mohammed Shami opened the attack for KXIP with Shane Watson on strike. At the other end was Faf du Plessis, with Ambati Rayudu pushed down the order. Other than a very spraying it down for a wide in the first delivery, Shami was on target and has gone for just 4 runs. CSK 4/0 (Watson 2, Du Plessis 1)

MS Dhoni: We will bat first. The wicket looks good to bat on initially, it’s hard on the top. The wickets that we played on mostly were on the slower side. It’s important to keep backing your strengths, irrespective of how many runs you’re putting on the board. Lots of changes for us. Mohit, Shardul and Bravo are out. Scott Kuggeleijn, Harbhajan and Faf come into the XI.

Ravichandran Ashwin: “We were looking to bat first as well. It looks really hard and hope it remains the same throughout the 40 overs. It’s quite emotional to be honest. I am very happy to be back playing here in Chennai and looking forward to it. I’m looking for the crowd to back us, which I guess is not going to happen. Chris (Gayle) is back into the XI, Hardus is out. Mujeeb sits out as well and Andrew Tye comes in.”

3.28 pm: Stephen Fleming: “We are happy to get three wins. We have some challenges as some of our players are injured. We try to read conditions and guess conditions but it keeps changing. And that is a challenge. The first game was a surprise, second game pitch was god but outfield was bad. We are excited. Kings have a similar kind of a set-up, good spinners and top-heavy batting.”

3:25 pm: PITCH REPORT: “Hot conditions, very warm out here. This wicket looks like a new-ball one. Spinners will have their work cut-out. There are plenty of runs on offer,” says Brett Lee in his pitch report.

Punjab, who won their last match against Delhi Capitals, will want to carry on with the momentum at their captain R Ashwin‘s hometown. Cracker of a contest coming up, the first of Super Saturday. What a way to begin the weekend!

After suffering their first defeat in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) return to their fortress as they take on Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in the 18th match on Saturday in Chennai.

 

While the MS Dhoni-led unit is coming into this game on the back of a loss against was the Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians (MI), KXIP, led by Ravichandran Ashwin, a former CSK player, will be fresh from their stunning win against Delhi Capitals (DC). The Punjab unit were almost down and out before Mohammed Shami and Sam Curran turned the tables on Shreyas Iyer and Co. to snatch a win from the jaws of defeat.

Although both the teams have played four matches each and won three each, KXIP are ahead of CSK in the points, courtesy a better net run-rate. A win in this game will take either of them at the top of the points table with 4 wins and 8 points against their name.
